Submissions for Sonorous Road’s 4th Annual Open Doors Short Play Festival are now open! The festival will take place in October (dates TBD) and we’re so excited to once again showcase local talent!

North Carolina playwrights have from today until Midnight EDT on July 22nd, 2019 to submit their original short play for the 2019 Festival. Submissions are limited to the first 100 scripts we receive and each playwright may only submit one script. Playwrights are responsible for reading and abiding by the guidelines below:

  1. Plays must be the original work of persons who are residents of North Carolina. In the case of collaborations, the residency requirement pertains to all authors. The play may have been produced previously but must not have been previously showcased at a prior Open Doors festival.

  2. Plays must be around 10 minutes long (roughly 9-13 pages).

  3. Your play must fit our theatre playing space and require minimal furniture, set pieces, lighting design, and technical effects.

  4. There must be a minimum of two characters and a maximum of eight allowed.

  5. No Children’s plays or musicals will be accepted. Film scripts that can be adapted for performance on our stage will be allowed. Please use standard formatting for a stage play whenever possible.

  6. Plays must be received by July 22nd, 2019. Only the first 100 script will be accepted. Please submit your scripts early.

  7. The play selection process begins with evaluation by our team of readers, who will score each play according to their assessment of plot, character, dialogue, and their own emotional response. The final acceptance to the festival is up to the discretion of the Artistic Director.

  8. Playwrights are not permitted to select their director this year. However, we will take director recommendations from the playwright. All directors will go through an interview process and will report directly to the producers.

  9. Playwrights agree to allow their short plays to be performed in the festival in October at Sonorous Road (specific dates TBD).

  10. During the Festival, the audience members will select a favorite show and the winning playwright will be given one free evening in the Sonorous Road space for a staged reading of a different show. Playwrights must adhere to the guidelines as set forth by Sonorous Road.
